Motorcycle USB Power Outlets

I’m not quite sure this counts as an electronics project, but I’m very proud of how well it turned out so I’m posting it.

I recently added a two USB port electrical outlet to my motorcycle. The outlet is mounted on the handlebars and the wiring runs under the gas tank to the battery and fuse box. The ground wire connects directly to the battery and the positive lead shares the same circuit as the turn signals and horn. I used a volt meter to find the correct wire coming out of the fuse box. Power is supplied to the outlets when the bike is on and the power is cut when the bike is off to keep the bike’s battery from being drained.

I also bought a mounting bracket for my phone. It works well but it’s made of plastic and is somewhat cheap so I’ll replace it eventually. Now I have a GPS solution that works very well that also keeps my cell phone charged all day while I’m out on my bike.
